“A Mary Wigman Dance Evening”
Fabián Barba
Dance - Solo
During his studies the young Ecuadorian dancer-choreographer Fabián Barba develops an interest by the work of one of the pioneers of Modern dance: the German dance artist Mary Wigman. At the beginning of the thirties she crossed the Atlantic Ocean for the first time with her expressionist dance recitals. Wigman changed the dance landscape in the United States forever, and until today she still influences the artistic scene in Ecuador. Fabián Barba's first work with Wigman’s repertoire was Schwingende Landschaft, a dance cycle comprising of seven solos from 1929. He reconstructed three of them using Wigman’s own film material. For A Mary Wigman Dance Evening Barba quotes from a wide selection of Wigman’s work, further developing the tension between his reconstruction and her original.
